Oura Ring 4 vs Whoop 5.0: the comparison is really about pricing structure
Both devices estimate sleep and recovery from the same class of signals. What separates them is not sensor quality — it is that one sells you hardware and rents you software, while the other rents you everything and never lets go.

Buy Oura if you want to measure sleep and own the device. It is cheaper over five years (about $699 versus $995 at Whoop's entry tier), it has the strongest published accuracy evidence in the category, and if you stop paying you still own a ring.
Buy Whoop if you train hard and want training load, not just sleep. Wrist placement survives the gym in a way a finger-worn ring does not, the strain model is genuinely built for athletes, and hardware upgrades come inside the membership. You are renting, permanently.
Buy neither if you are hoping the device will fix your sleep. Both measure. Neither intervenes. If your actual problem is waking up hot at 3am, a bed-cooling system will do more than any tracker.

The five-year cost, which is the number nobody quotes
Reviews compare a $349 ring to a $199 membership and call the ring expensive. That comparison is wrong in both directions. Oura charges once for hardware and monthly for software; Whoop folds hardware into an annual fee that never ends. Run it out to five years and the ranking inverts.

Two honest caveats on that table. Oura's finish choices run to $499, which narrows the gap; and a lithium cell in a sealed titanium ring has a finite life, so a five-year window may include one replacement for some owners. Whoop, conversely, has historically rolled hardware upgrades into membership — a real benefit, though the policy has changed before and generated significant user backlash when it did. Seasonal promotions of roughly 17% are common on Whoop annual signups, which brings Peak close to One's list price.
Even allowing for all of that, the structural point survives: Oura's cost curve flattens and Whoop's does not.

The gym problem is the real form-factor divide
This is the single most under-reported difference. A ring sits on a finger that grips things. Under a loaded barbell, a kettlebell handle or a pull-up bar, the ring is compressed against bone — uncomfortable at best, and the pressure distorts the optical signal the device depends on. Plenty of ring owners simply take it off to train, which means the device misses the exact period it is supposed to be scoring. Whoop's placement sidesteps this entirely, and it is the reason strength athletes converge on it despite the worse economics.
The battery difference is philosophical, not just practical
Oura gives you 5–8 days and then asks for 20–80 minutes on a charger — during which it measures nothing. Whoop's slide-on pack charges the device on your body, so it never stops recording. If you care about an unbroken longitudinal record, that matters more than the raw hours.
Accuracy: what the evidence supports
Neither device reads brain activity. Both reconstruct sleep stages from motion, pulse waveform, heart-rate variability, respiration and skin temperature. So the question is not whether they are "right" — it is how close the inference gets.
Read those four numbers together and the picture is clear. The best consumer rings land within a few points of the disagreement that exists between trained humans — which is a genuinely impressive engineering result and not what sceptics assume. But the category as a whole is much weaker: independent testing of six wrist-worn devices produced Cohen's kappa values from 0.21 to 0.53, which is "fair to moderate," not "good."
Whoop publishes its own validation work against polysomnography. Independent four-stage agreement figures directly comparable to the Oura study are harder to locate, so we are not going to invent a number for the comparison. Where the evidence is asymmetric, saying so is more useful than pretending it isn't. The wider picture is in how accurate are sleep trackers.
Staging is the hard problem. Sleep timing is not. Both devices are reliable on when you fell asleep, when you woke, and total sleep time — and for most people that is the metric that actually changes behaviour. If you learn you are averaging 6h10m rather than the 7h30m you assumed, the staging breakdown is a footnote.
Which subscription tier, if you go Whoop
The tier most people should buy
Strain, Recovery, Sleep, VO₂ max, heart-rate zones, steps, cardiovascular strain and musculoskeletal load. This is the product Whoop is known for. Ships with a wired charger and a CoreKnit band.
Worth $40 for the charger alone
Adds the wireless PowerPack — which is what makes charge-while-worn practical — plus Whoop Age and a real-time stress monitor. The hardware upgrade is the reason to take this tier; the longevity scoring is a nice-to-have.
Only for the ECG
Requires the separate MG hardware and adds on-demand ECG plus daily blood-pressure insights. If you have a clinical reason to want intermittent ECG, this is a real feature. If you don't, it is $160 a year for reassurance.
Verdict
Oura Ring 4
For: people whose primary question is "how am I actually sleeping," who want the record to keep running for years without an open-ended commitment, and who don't lift heavy. Best published accuracy evidence in the category, lowest five-year cost, and you own the object.
Not for: strength athletes, anyone who wants training-load guidance, or people who dislike wearing a ring to bed.

Is Oura or Whoop cheaper over five years?
Oura, by a clear margin. Ring 4 at $349 plus $69.99 a year comes to roughly $699 across five years. Whoop One totals $995, Peak $1,195 and Life $1,795 over the same period. The gap widens further if you keep the ring beyond five years, and narrows if you buy Oura's $499 finishes or need a replacement ring.
Does Oura or Whoop track sleep more accurately?
Oura has the stronger published evidence: 79% agreement with clinical polysomnography on four-stage classification in a Brigham and Women's Hospital study, against roughly 83% agreement between two human scorers. Whoop publishes its own validation research, but directly comparable independent four-stage figures are harder to find. Neither measures brain activity — both infer stages from pulse, motion, respiration and temperature.
Can I use either one without a subscription?
Not meaningfully. Oura sells the ring outright and includes one month of membership, after which most of the app is gated behind $5.99/month — but the hardware remains yours. Whoop does not sell hardware separately at all; cancelling the membership ends access completely and the strap stops being useful.
Which is better if I lift weights?
Whoop, and it isn't close. A ring on a gripping finger gets compressed by bars and handles, which is uncomfortable and degrades the optical reading. Most ring owners who lift end up removing it to train, which defeats the purpose. Whoop's wrist or bicep placement avoids the problem, and its strain model is designed around training load rather than daily readiness.
How long does the Oura Ring 4 battery last?
Five to eight days per charge depending on size and feature use, with a full charge taking roughly 20 to 80 minutes. Whoop's cycle is shorter but its slide-on PowerPack charges the device while you wear it, so the record never has a gap. Whether that matters depends on how much you care about unbroken data.
Do either of these actually improve your sleep?
Not directly — they measure, they don't intervene. The honest case for a tracker is that accurate feedback changes behaviour: seeing a hard number on your average sleep duration tends to move bedtimes in a way that intentions don't. If you want a device that acts on a physiological mechanism rather than reporting on one, look at bed-temperature systems, where the underlying evidence is considerably stronger.
