Total Vitality Zone

About this site

Total Vitality Zone is written and tested by one person, publishing under the site's own name. That is a limitation, and stating it plainly is more useful than implying a newsroom that doesn't exist.

Last updated 6 Sep 2026 Editorial policy Testing protocol
In short

This site reviews consumer sleep and recovery hardware and explains the physiology underneath it. Reviews follow a published 30-night protocol. It is not written by a clinician, it does not give medical advice, and where a claim needs expertise the site doesn't have, the research is cited and named rather than paraphrased into a confident sentence.

Why this site exists

Consumer sleep technology is now a large and fast-moving category sold almost entirely on testimonial. Devices that cost between three hundred and five thousand dollars are marketed with before-and-after stories, and the reviews that rank for them are mostly rewritten press releases with an affiliate link at the bottom.

Meanwhile the actual evidence is interesting and largely unread. There are validation studies putting consumer rings within a few percentage points of the disagreement that exists between two human sleep technicians. There is decades-old physiology explaining exactly why bedroom temperature matters and precisely who it won't help. Almost none of that reaches the person deciding whether to spend $4,849 on a mattress cover.

So the editorial line is narrow and repeatable: take the measurement seriously, take the marketing sceptically, and publish the gap between them.

What qualifies this site to write about it

Hands-on use under a fixed protocol. Devices are tested for a minimum of thirty consecutive nights following the procedure published at how we test — a fourteen-night baseline, a discarded acclimatisation week, a measured window, and simultaneous head-to-head wear where two devices make the same claim. Hardware is bought at retail wherever the budget allows.

Reading the primary literature rather than the summaries. Where an accuracy figure appears on this site, it comes from a named study, and the page says who ran it. When a manufacturer published its own validation research, that is stated on the page rather than laundered into an unattributed statistic.

Willingness to publish an unhelpful answer. Several pages here conclude that you should not buy the thing, or that the free intervention is sufficient, or that nobody has established the answer. That is the point of the exercise.

What this site is not

Read this before acting on anything here

This is not written by a doctor. Not a physician, not a sleep specialist, not a registered dietitian. Nothing published here is medical advice, a diagnosis, or a treatment recommendation.

The diagnostics section in particular exists to help you order a panel that can actually be interpreted and to have a better-informed conversation with a clinician. It is not a substitute for one, and no blood result should be acted on without a doctor who has your full history.

It is not a laboratory. Nobody outside a sleep clinic has ground truth for sleep staging, and this site does not pretend otherwise. What can be measured here is measured — sleep timing against an independent device and a written log, heart rate against a chest-strap ECG, bed temperature against a logging thermometer. What cannot be measured without EEG is reported as an estimate and deferred to published research. The limits are set out explicitly in the protocol.

It is not a supplement site. This domain previously published supplement reviews. It no longer does. The evidence base in that category does not support meaningful comparative reviewing, and the honest conclusion would have been the same negative one two hundred times over.

It is not neutral about money. Some outbound links earn a commission, every page carrying one says so above the link, and the full arrangement is at disclosure. Products that pay nothing are recommended here where they are the better choice — including the cheaper option in the bed-cooling comparison, which earns considerably less than the alternative it beats.

What this site will not do

  • Accept payment for a positive review, or any payment tied to a conclusion.
  • Give a manufacturer copy approval, fact-check rights, or advance sight of a verdict.
  • Trade coverage for early access or embargo privileges.
  • Review a product nobody here has used.
  • Invent numbers to fill a gap. Where a review is inside its testing window, the page is marked In testing and shows no results. Those nights have not been slept yet. Empty is better than fabricated, and a site built on measurement that fakes its measurements is worth nothing at all.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, say so and it gets fixed — on the page, with a dated note, not silently. Where a conclusion changes because a product genuinely improved, the old conclusion stays visible beside the new one so the record reads honestly.

Raw testing exports are available on request to anyone who wants to check the arithmetic.

On the byline

Articles here are bylined to the site rather than an individual. That is a deliberate, temporary choice while the first round of testing is under way — not an attempt to seem larger than one person. It will be replaced with a named byline and a full background once there is completed first-hand data to put a name to.
